Tips for Taking Your Kids to the Dentist
Many people develop dental anxieties in childhood, but you can take steps to ensure your child’s earliest dental experiences are positive ones. By beginning your child’s dental visits early and encouraging healthy, positive dental habits right from the start, you are helping your child develop the foundation he or she needs for a lifetime of happy, healthy smiles.
1. Start early – Your child’s first dental visit should be before his first birthday. He may not have visible teeth yet, but he does have teeth growing below the gum line. We can give you valuable tips on cleaning his gums and developing healing habits. We will also check for early signs of dental disease and discuss ways that you can reduce your child’s risk.
2. Keep it positive – Children thrive when they have a predictable routine. You can prepare your child for their first appointment and the ones following by explaining what they can expect. If you are not sure how to proceed or feel a little anxious yourself, don’t worry: We understand the unique needs of our parent and child patients, and we can help both of you feel right at home and relaxed.
3. Set a good example – When it comes to kids, actions really do speak louder than words. Make sure you take good care of your own teeth and visit us regularly for checkups. Show them how important a healthy smile can be, and talk to her about all the things that you can do to take care of your teeth. Talk about things you can do to improve your dental health, too, like giving up energy drinks or eating more fruits and vegetables.
