Keeping Your Teeth Healthy at Home

Good dental habits can go a long way towards keeping your dental teeth healthy and preventing common dental diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease. Do you know the best ways to take care of your teeth? Our dental care professionals offer tips at every checkup to help you make the most of your at-home routine.

1. Don’t rush when you brush
Many people brush too quickly, which leaves a thin film of plaque coating their teeth. Set a timer for at least two minutes, and brush that entire time. Using a powered toothbrush can be more effective than a manual toothbrush. Finally, be sure to brush each surface of each tooth.

2. Floss, floss, and floss some more
Cleaning in between your teeth is not optional. Plaque and bacteria like to lurk in these hard-to-reach areas, and if you fail to floss or use an interdental cleaner, they will continue to build up while releasing toxins that will decay your teeth and irritate your gums.

3. Schedule a checkup at least twice a year
Regular checkups might seem like a waste of time if you are brushing and flossing well at home, but we can see parts of your mouth that you cannot and spot critical signs of problems before they cause symptoms for you. You should visit us every six months unless you are at a higher-than-average risk of decay or gum disease.
