Common Problems with Dentures and Their Solutions
Dentures can replace all the teeth in your mouth, but as with other restorations, they can develop problems over time. Taking care of your dentures and your mouth can reduce the risk of problems, and addressing any issues that do develop as soon as possible can reduce the risk of more serious issues.
Common problems with dentures include:
1. A bad fit
Over time, bone and gum tissue can change shape, which affects the way your dentures fit. This can lead to irritation, pain, slipping and poor retention. The best way to manage this issue in most cases is by having your dentures refit. Some patients may need new dentures.
Sore spots can occur when the dentures don’t fit in one or two spots. Refining or adjusting the fit of the dentures should eliminate the problem. Waiting too long can lead to infection, so let us know as soon as possible if you notice any irritation.
3. Bad breath
Bad breath is frequently caused by poor dental hygiene. Dentures need to be cleaned just like natural teeth do. Brush your dentures and gums with a soft-bristled brush. You may need to periodically use a special denture cleaning solution. Professional cleaning may be needed in some cases. Soak your dentures in a solution specially made for that purpose or water, but avoid using mouthwash, which can lead to unwanted changes in the fit of your dentures. You can still use mouthwash when not wearing your dentures.
